Five Great Tomato Growing Tips

Here are five excellent tomato growing tips to help you get the best out of your tomato plants – one of the most popular vegetable plants found in any garden, in almost anywhere in the world.

Growing the perfect tomato doesn’t have to be hard. If it’s your first time growing them, then just paying attention to a few key details will make all the difference.

Tomatoes are great candidates for growing in containers, where you can exercise full control over the soil. Many people will opt to use grow bags for tomato growing, and there are a variety of types out there on the market that are specifically configured for tomatoes. Either way, getting the soil right is the key.

So, here are five top tomato growing tips.

  1. Give the seeds plenty of space
If you cramp too many seeds into one little area they are going to be battling for water and nutrients, and growth will be stunted significantly. If growing from seed, use trays with about 3x3inch squares, and only allow one plant per square to develop. Transfer the young seedling plants into their final homes once they reach from 7 to 10 inches tall.
  2. Make sure the main soil is good enough
The equation is very simple; Poor soil will result in a poor crop, making it not worth the effort. When you transplant your seedlings into their permanent growing space, make certain the soil is rich in nutrients and also contains some extra calcium, this will stop a common condition called blossom end rot. Including some pearlite or vermiculite will also help with retaining moisture.
  3. Provide your plants with enough light
Tomatoes need lots of light, at least 6 hours of sun a day, so locate them appropriately – this is one of THE most important factors in getting good tomatoes.
  4. Keep your tomato plants warm
Tomato plants love the heat and will grow faster if you manage to keep them in a warmer environment. It’s why many will choose to grow them in a greenhouse or conservatory. In temperate climates, tomato plants grown outside will invariably not do as well as those grown in a greenhouse.
  5. Water and feed your tomato plants regularly
Tomato plants need a lot of water. They are also heavy feeders and require feeding at least once a week. This is one of the key things to a successful crop. There is also a technique to watering that will ensure a better crop. Do not water them every day – rather allow the soil to get quite dry, to the point where the leaves on the vine are on the brink of drooping – then water the plant copiously, almost giving it too much water. Then, once again, do not water it until the soil becomes quite dry. This is a well-tested technique that many gardeners use to get a better crop.

These are just a few tomato growing tips that really only cover the basics. Tomato growing can be as easy or as involved as you want it to be.
