Optimizing Bedroom Space

Making the most out of space in some areas of the house can be as simple as decluttering, throwing away old and broken items, or giving away furniture. But for some rooms like the bedroom, the most prominent piece of furniture (which is the bed) can be hard to work around. Sometimes, rooms get too small even in accommodating a bed and a working space around it, while other people just need more floor space to move around. To help with that, here are some helpful space-saving solutions for your bedroom.

1. Reduce bed size.

If you are short on space, you really need to compromise on the size of the bed. Choose a bed with the size you actually need and are able to survive with. You can be surprised with how much space you can actually free up if you would give up dreaming for that king-sized bed.

2. Opt for multifunctional beds.

If you’re living in a small apartment where you live with a roommate/s, space is really golden. Instead of getting the usual bed, you can use a futon or a sofa bed. This furniture provides a bed and a sofa in one, which makes your bedroom itself multi-functional, like turning it into a den when you have a few friends over. Or grab a bed that has built-in storage underneath and/or a bookshelf at the headboard. Or better yet, why not install a Murphy bed? This type of bed is pulled down from the wall, providing floor space when the bed is hidden. Plus, modern murphy beds got cooler now – they can house a foldable desk or a lounge area while the bed is not in use. They also come with attached and built-in shelving too, which is perfect for storing more things.

3. Organize closets and dressers.

Sometimes, it just seems like you lack space for your clothes, but the truth is you really haven’t organized your dresser properly. Are you making use of every inch of storage you have? Are you folding your clothes in your dressers in the most optimized manner? Take the time to properly store all your clothing so you can get more storage. Store away your out-of-season clothes (like your coats and sweaters for winter) out of your frequently used drawer or dresser and place them in a hall closet.

4. Remove large furniture.

Huge armoires and dressers, especially those grand and curvy ones, are not practical when you’re trying to optimize your bedroom space. Choose slim and streamlined storage solutions. Move your entertainment console to another room in the house, but if you can’t live without a television on your bedroom, choose to mount a flat-screen TV on the wall to add space to your room.

5. Use multifunctional and space-saving furniture.

The key to optimizing space is making most out of every piece of furniture, and making a lot of storage areas to keep things hidden and organized. Get a foldable table or a foldable, wall-mounted desktop to make a spot for getting work done, which you can fold out if you whenever you needed more space. If you need an ottoman, choose one with storage inside. Get a table that works out as a workspace and a vanity at the same time. Instead of getting a nightstand, have an open shelf mounted on the wall to visually enlarge space. Or, instead of making something works as a nightstand, have your work desk placed beside the bed so your desktop can serve as a nightstand as well.

6. Maximize space under the bed.

The space under the bed is a precious amount of floor space. Like we stated earlier, you can choose a storage bed. Or you can create a storage solution that makes use of that space, like placing your baskets and organizer storage in there. You may also raise your bed so you can add more storage containers underneath. Lofting the bed would also be a great idea, as you can turn the under bed space into a work desk space, lounging space, a reading nook or simply another bed area.

7. Maximize vertical space for storage.

If you own a lot of books and you want a case to store them all in your bedroom, choose a tall bookshelf instead of a wide one. It’s also a plus if you choose open shelves as the lack of storage doors tend to open up the space. As much as possible, utilize all vertical space efficiently to reduce the need for more storage that has to be placed on the floor.

8. Embrace wall-mounted shelving and cabinetry.

Wall mounting of shelves and cabinets is one of the most practical storage solutions for rooms lacking in space but in a bad need for more storage. Instead of a traditional nightstand, mount a simple crate turned on the side. Instead of having a headboard, mount a cabinet above the bed for storage of pillows, beddings, towels, bags or other needs. Just make sure it is placed above the height of your head when you’re sitting up. The space underneath is a great place to install lights, so you won’t need a bedside lamp when you’re reading in bed.

9. Use sconces.

As stated earlier, wall-mounting is a great space-saver, and it works for lighting pieces too. Sometimes, overhead lighting can be too harsh, so adding sconces as a task and ambient light would really work well in a bedroom. It doesn’t take up valuable floor and tabletop space as a floor lamp or desk lamp would.
